About Kayla Williams

About Kayla
I’m Kayla Williams, an Inuk artist, illustrator, muralist and author based in Labrador.
I’m a self-taught artist and the founder of Big Land Design, the studio behind my illustration, murals, books, original artwork and commissioned design work. My practice ranges from children’s publishing and large-scale public art to logo and identity artwork created for Indigenous organizations, businesses and major companies.
I grew up in Labrador, and much of my work is shaped by the place I call home: its landscapes, people, stories and everyday life. My father is Nunatsiavut Inuit, with family roots throughout Labrador, and I also have Scottish and French ancestry. These connections, along with my own experiences living and creating in Labrador, continue to influence my work and storytelling.

My Work
My practice moves between illustration, painting, public art, publishing and design.
I’ve created murals and commissioned artwork for organizations, businesses and public spaces throughout Labrador, including 5 Wing Goose Bay, the College of the North Atlantic, Torngat Secretariat and local businesses. My work has also travelled beyond Labrador through publishing, exhibitions, collaborations and commissioned projects.
Logo and identity work has also become an important part of my practice. I’ve developed original artwork and visual identities for Indigenous organizations, businesses and larger companies, bringing an illustrator’s approach to branding rather than treating it as traditional graphic design.
I love that my work can take completely different forms, from the tiny details of a picture book to an illustration that becomes an organization’s identity, or a mural spanning an entire wall.

Books & Illustration
I am the author and illustrator of Aurora’s Journey, published by Kegedonce Press, and the author and contributing illustrator of Labrador Skies, published by Inhabit Media.
I also illustrated Water Warriors, created with Indigenous youth and published by SucSeed, and independently published Cozy North: A Labrador Life Coloring Book.
I continue to develop new books and work on illustration projects with publishers, organizations and clients across Canada.

Workshops, Author Visits & Speaking
Alongside my studio practice, I lead art workshops, school and author visits, paint nights and creative programming for children, youth and adults.
I’ve worked with schools, arts organizations, Indigenous organizations and other groups throughout Labrador and beyond. My sessions range from hands-on painting and drawing workshops to book readings, artist talks and speaking engagements about Indigenous entrepreneurship.
